Title: Retro Crisps
sshblack - January 9, 2006 04:16 PM (GMT)
I have been prompted by talk of old smith's crisps adverts to see what crisps, (even they still may be around) everyone remembers munching through when we were young. I think the smith crisps were called Salt 'n Shake and you used to get a little sachet of either salt, barbecue or cheese and onion powder which you used to salt and shake over your crisps.
Space raiders were the nastiet crisps that ever lived, and I believe they are still 10p. They were made from cardboard and E-numbers. not necessarily in that order of quantity either.
Lemon and Scampi Nik Naks ruled the waves when it came to crisps and then some horn jockey in marketing at golden wonder decided cheese and chives would be a better substitute. What a fool. He was obviously new. Thankfully you can now buy these heavenly lemon & scampi crisps in 6 packs all on their own with a huge banner on the front saying BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! I had to write an enormous amount of letters for that.
chipsticks, frazzles and squares used to come in some kind of combo 12 pack which pleased all the family.
Oh and wotsit sandwhiches were the mutts nuts.
DonkeySpank - January 9, 2006 04:20 PM (GMT)
I remember some VERY NASTY "crisps" that were Lemon & Lime flavour - they were called something like "Gremlins" or whatever and were "corn snacks" - basically they were rabbit's intestines fried with vole's gonads I think.
Maybe it was a Welsh thing!
psj3809 - January 9, 2006 05:35 PM (GMT)
I really like Space Raiders !! Up north theres a 10p packet of crisps (salt and vinegar only i think) called 'Thingies'. With the slogan 'Dont forget my Thingies mum' ! Theyre beautiful and i could eat 100's of those
I miss the old Ringos which were a different texture, same with the Monster Munch. These new ones arent the same !
I'm not a cheapskate or that but i much prefer the type of 10p crisps you get rather than boring old Walkers etc.
planetmatt - January 9, 2006 10:11 PM (GMT)
old ringos and old monster munch were fab. i love space raiders but i cant say the scampi nik naks did it for me. i prefer the nice n spicy ones.
markopoloman - January 9, 2006 11:32 PM (GMT)
On the subject of crisps, I see in the news today that Golden Wonder are up shit creek!
Gone into administration!
Oh dear!
Don't they make wheat crunchies? - if so, I'll be very very pissed off!
Ghostbiscuit - January 10, 2006 01:46 AM (GMT)
Disaster! I don't even think you get cheap supermarket Wheat Crunchies knock-offs. If they vanish from our shelves I shall be deeply upset...
On a happier note: Did anyone ever see the ad for the relaunched Scampi 'n' Lemon Nik-Naks that I think was was in Viz a couple of years ago? Full page picture of a guy turning his head away, looking disgusted having just clearly smelt another guy's proffered fingers. Tagline: They're back. Scampi and Lemon Nik-Naks.
Made me laugh, the big child I am.

So many companies in trouble at the mo....or is just me!!
psj3809 - January 10, 2006 01:45 PM (GMT)
Yuck scampi nick nacks just make me feel soooo ill. I remember at our tuck shop at school tons of kids loved those, i loved the nice n spicy ones but i remember one of the fit girls at school i was chatting to one break, she must have eaten a packet as her breath stunk of scampi (wont tell you what that reminds me of but i'm sure you can guess) and i went off her straight away.
I think scamp nick nacks are a bit like Marmite, you either love it or detest it. theres no inbetween !
markopoloman - January 10, 2006 04:26 PM (GMT)
back on the golden wonder thing......

Flippin' heck! My brother in law will waste away. He lives on Pot Noodles and Wheat Crunchies. Oh well, time to introduce him to the concept of carrots and broccoli :)
Deeply Cynical - January 10, 2006 08:35 PM (GMT)
Is the Pot Noodle still produced by Golden Wonder? - I thought they were sold off.
Anyway - Does anyone remember KP Discos? - designed to compete with Smiths' Square Crisps (but round)
Jumpman - January 10, 2006 09:34 PM (GMT)
Crisps annoy me to an immense degree...
Snack foods in general as it happens... why do they have to keep changing it? It seems to me that when I was a kid things tasted like the flavour on the packet.
Now it seems that every few months there has to a "NEW FLAVOUR", "IMPROVED FLAVOUR" or "NEW RECIPE" in your favourite snack.
Cheese flavoured snacks are especially guilty. The cheese flavour seems to have got more and more synthetic and sickly. Is that what kids want?
The other thing is adding sweetener to everything. You buy a packet of crisps and suddenly it tastes sweet! Or what about Ryvita? It's a crackerbread. I bought it not so long ago and it proclaimed it had a "NEW IMPROVED FLAVOUR". Ok... I spread a couple and tried it. It tasted it like it had sugar on it?
Does everything have to tast artificial or sweet these days before people will eat it?
And the snack industry seems to fall over itself these days to try and outdo their rivals by changing their products on a highly regular basis. Nothing can stay the same these days because of the ever present fear of being put out of business by the fickle public.
It sucks.
Quavers were good. They got a new flavour, I hated it. They got another new flavour and I liked it again. They now have another flavour afaik and I haven't tried them...
Bring back Tubes & Loops, put Square Crisps back like they were, make Hula hoops less greasy again and sell Wheat Crunchies in all major outlets.
Oh yeah, and Puffs.
DonkeySpank - January 11, 2006 11:08 AM (GMT)
There's a poll in the Metro newspaper this morning about whether anyone will miss Golden Wonder once they're gone - I'd urge everyone to vote vote vote! Link is here:
Metro Poll - currently 36% Yes and 64% No!!!! AARGHH!! What's wrong with people?!?! ;)
planetmatt - January 11, 2006 11:55 AM (GMT)
I voted Yes. Without Golden Wonder, Walkers, the Microsoft of crisps and savoury snacks will have a clear run at world domination. They may even rewrite histroy so no one will ever know that Salt and Vinegar IS blue and not green.
DonkeySpank - January 11, 2006 11:59 AM (GMT)
EXACTLY!!!! Green is for Cheese 'n' Onion FFS!!! I think the worst thing Walkers ever did was this "colur re-assignment" gubbins - confusing as hell for all us who grew up in the 70s and early 80s and just plain evil too! GRRR!

Do you remember "Mr Crisp"? I think that's what they called them. They were at that lark as well.
I only remember eating those crisps at Butlins and social functions. Odd.
I had some Wheat Crunchies today. You better do the same before the Crisps Police blast them from the shop shelves.

Just come back from late night shopping at Tesco's after work!
Got 3 multi packs of wheat crunchies :D

Good lad. But did they have that new "cheese" flavour I'm so scared of?
Sonic Quack - January 12, 2006 07:09 AM (GMT)
I stepped in to snack heaven the other day. A local petrol station sells not only Cheese Moments (yum) but also Scampi Fries!! Scampi fries really are great, although rather stinky for other people. Haven't seen 'em in years and years.
SQ
Lindopski - January 12, 2006 03:31 PM (GMT)
the only places I find Scampi fires now are in Bargain booze or the pub.
I think that Square crisps were always Smiths and then walkers took them over and changed things.
Ringos old texture was 1 million times better they had their own style which they no longer do , they blend in with any onion rings now whereas before you could tell you were eating a Ringo.
with this being retro however , I used to buy these classics.
Farmer Giles crisps
Piglets in the shape of a pig (MINT)
Hedgehog flavoured crisps (these didnt stick around long)
Fish and chips , more a biscuit than a crisp also available in Chicken
Invaders (still available)
Big Wheel shaped things in a massive bag from Kwik save ) I used to create ATV bikes from thesw using cocktail sticks , crispsticks and wotsits.
and these other things that were a similar texture to piglets but were just a torpedo shape and usually broken into loads of bits available in a few flavours cant remember their name though

Yep! Spicey Tomatoe, Bacon and. ..........Cheese!!!!
wilshy - January 13, 2006 09:48 AM (GMT)
Transformersnacks - Spicy Flavour
or
Fish & Chips (remember them?)
Nothing more needs to be said on old crisps ;)

As a kid on holiday in Malta, I found crisps called PLOPS!
Very dry but FANTASTIC! NEver before has a plot tasted so cool!

I had these in my lunch box every day from the ages of 4-6. Completely forgot about them. Unfortunantly I cant remember what they tasted like. God damn memory.
DonkeySpank - January 13, 2006 03:23 PM (GMT)
Anyone remember crisps from the late 70s called "Rancheros"? Red packet, "corn snacks" or whatever, similar to Monster Munch I think, smokey flavour, picture on the packet was of a bunch of cowboys riding into the susnet...
or did i imagine these things? Everyone I mention them to has never heard of 'em!
RS200 - January 13, 2006 04:38 PM (GMT)
Have any of you noticed that in most other countries "walkers" are called "Lays" ?. why is this ?? .. why not "walkers" ? .. I mean, be pretty stupid calling them "Lays" here in the UK (hey, wanna lay?") but to my knowledge "Walkers" isn't a swear word in any language !.
Are we (UK) the only country to have "small" bags of Crisps too ?? .. when i am abroad i can only find HUGE bags which you can make a playpen out of when you are done with it but It also has the added shitness of them going soft quicker (as you gotta be one fat pig to eat all of them on one sitting) .. and there is not much worse than a soft crisp ..
My favourite Crisps ? ... easy ... Sausage and Tomato "Nosebags"
though there is some fantastic snacks mentioned here already, Scampi and Lemon Nik Naks and Roast Beef Monster Munch .. food of the gods ..

Does anyone remember Football Crazy's? They were round corn puff balls and I think they were bacon flavour.
Also have a vague recollection of Smax, bacon flavour oval biscuit thingies.

Warning! My local Superdrug still has Wheat Crunchies, but no Nik Naks.... :ph43r:
Clebin - January 31, 2006 10:49 AM (GMT)
None of my mates remember the 3D pig-shaped crisps.
They had a round hollow belly, trotters and a head. A bit like the inflatable pig on the Pink Floyd album cover.
Terrific crisp technology lost to the world, like the Aztecs.

I do. Sorry for not mentioning it. I used to get them when I was at nursery. Oddly I thought until reacent years that they were Frazzles. But no, they weren't, that something else entirely. Although I think if I thought about it long enough I might remember.
Hang on, where they called "Pigs"? Or was it "Piglets"?
Anyway, have a crispy link -
I Love Crisps.
I've joined their forum and asked on our behalf. Yay.

I've given up. I'm too scared to eat the cheese Wheat Crunchies. I'm migrated to Pom Bears.
I rightly hang my head in shame.

I'm informed those crisps were called Piglets and armed with that knowledge I present the following:

Does anyone remember:
Sausage and tomato flavour wotsits
Spicy tomato flavour snaps
Meanies (even the 5p ones!)
Football crazies
I definitely prefer the 10p and 20p bag of crisps over the boring walkers "ordinary" crisp. Spicy flavour space raiders are yum!

The end is nigh...
Superdrug is reducing it's last stock of stinky (possibly) cheese Wheat Crunchies. Unless that company buys them it's all over.
Buy `em I say! And bring back worcester sauce flavour. What is it with cheese flavour? Do people only ever want to eat oddly powdery cheese snacks?
peter rousselange - March 16, 2006 06:05 PM (GMT)
Blimey, Worcester sauce flavour, forgot about them, happy
