Title: Forum Decorum
Description: Can't move for them all...
Turrican - January 20, 2006 07:36 PM (GMT)
With so many forums cropping up all over the place, I felt the need to post this particular thread aas I personally feel that there are just too many forums around right now and the fact is is that we are seeing the same topics posted in the same forums and the last thing you feel like doing is re-typing the same answer to it all. It would be interesting to hear people's opinions on all this as I am intrigued.
One problem is that as the retro scene grows and more forums crop up, there could become splinter groups and gangs and it could all get a bit "West Side Story" on us... we CANNOT allow that to happen. It is our hobby, it is our passion, it is the retro scene and it belongs to us all :)

Voted for too many.
But not lots too many! I agree its a pain in the arse posting over and over on the same subject - sometimes I feel like doing a CUT N PASTE for half of them!
Lets hope RF & RB pull sites together - and maybe pull those together with another of the smaller sites. (Or maybe even here?????)

You don't have to post in every forum you know. ;) :D Yes there are lots of forums, but we all have our favourites where we feel more comfortable etc. I can only think of about 6 retro forums - are there more than that (with a decent number of members & topics) ?

I KNOW you don't have to post in every forum, but maybe people would if the topics were a little different. I just seem to be posting less and less in general and I cannot help but think that this is to blame.... old fashioned as my views or not.

I think there are plenty of forums ([pedantic]fora[/pedantic]) available at the moment - only problem I have is that some of them are too addictive to leave behind and yet very similar. For example, I post on AtariAge about atari stuf (shock!) but not about atari stuff on RP, RF & RS. However as RS, RF & RP are very "general" retro gaming I tend to post the same stuff more or less. Any more "general" forums pop up and I'll probably leave them alone, but I love RF, RP & RS and would still hunt down a d contribute to "specialist" forums like AtariAge, etc.

The trouble is, apart from having threads about specific games (which could lead into the thousands) you're bound to have the same type of threads. Looking around at all the current gen gaming forums, it's the same there.
People also like to feel safe & 'important' in their own forums, so they'll never want to be/or like being a small fish in a large pond. And some people just like shouting & being all 'Look at me ! Look at me !'. And some people like talking about all that technical stuff & keeping everything 'proper'.
I do see where you're coming from as I browse all the usual Rllmuk,NTSC-uk, Mysega, gamesradar forums, but I've given up posting, because you do end up saying the same thing. I should really just pick two forums & stick with them.

I just feel that when Live Publishing had their RG forum, everyone posted there and that was pretty much the major HQ if you will for anything Retro. It just seems that since Live's demise, the whole forum scene has careered out of control and as soon as you turn your back for five minutes... BOOM there's another one. I'm not saying that there should be a complete eradication of forums, I just think that there are just too many that cover the same field.

i find theres waaaaaaaaaaaay too many
thats why i stick to WOS, here and ive just joined the new retro gamer one, theyll do me, sorry the other peeps, boyo etc
its just not humanly possible to keep going on em all all the time tbh

Its a catch 22. I'm glad theres so many forums in a way as retro is so popular at the moment which is cool
Then again like you said with so many different forums theres so many similar threads. I dont know why some people split from this one to create other new ones. I think theres just far too many
The official RG forum is good but theres a fair few others which could be grouped together really.
At the end of the day i think it comes down to the posters (us) and the mods. If Mods get too heavy handed then people will bugger off, if posters post too much rubbbish then people will go elsewhere
I think this forums come along very well, any posts which arent retro-related are obviously in the 'any other stuff' section so most of the main retro threads are retro related and dont go off too much on a tangent.
After Retro Ball though i feel a fair few of us know each other better so in the past when there was a retro thread with so many off topic comments it might have wound some people up, now we know each other a fair bit better its not so bad.
But yeah its a pity theres soooo many different retro forums springing up

Agreed. It's nice to have an even balance of o/t banter with good/interesting retro chat. I think the new RG Forum is doing that pretty well at the moment.

RG may have a good coverage of most of the retro things needing discussed, but for me personally, it just doesn't have character... it feels a little falt or stale when you go into the forum.... is it just me?
helloall - January 28, 2006 03:10 PM (GMT)
Its not just you turrican - But I hope we dont lose all the good peeps that made this forum so good.

Eh ?
Turrican - January 31, 2006 07:22 PM (GMT)
I meant to put flat, but I was tired......
I would say "so sue me", but you know how that could backfire... lmao :P
Damaged Goods - February 1, 2006 08:57 AM (GMT)
Ah right. There was me thinking that you'd invented your own special word. I suppose it might seem flat to some people because there's less o/t joviality there & it's an official magazine forum, moderated by the staff.
Turrican - February 1, 2006 10:08 AM (GMT)
the thing is though, so was the LIVE forum and it was pretty jovial... so being official or not does not change anything.... someone back me up please... :D
