Title: Knightmare
Description: Bring the damn thing back!

Is it me or did the kids tv show Knightmare rock so hard, that they left it out of the bible in case it over- shadowed Jesus?

In case you can't remember it, three kids used to sit in the castle with quite a pervy version of Gandolf, and direct their friend who had a gaint helmet on through a virtual reality world full of goblins and medieval folk. They also used to pick up a shield with an eye on it and they could get a new angle on things.

When going from one level up to another they had to go through the dungeons and be quick to avoid the goblins who you were always alerted to with a giant horn noise.

They basically in each room had to direct someone who was blinded by the giant helmet to a black door to get through to the next room. In each room was a new puzzle or obstruction to the door.

I tried explaining this to my office and they looked at me as if I had lost the plot.

Please tell me someone else watched it. The furthest I ever saw anyone get was level 3, did anyone ever complete it?

Why hasn't anyone brought it back? It would be amazing nowdays with all our cgi technology.

Yep, I was a big Knightmare fan. Bought the computer game, read the adventure books, even tried to apply to go on it...

Challenge TV have been repeating it recently, and it still looks cool.

There were rumours of a comeback a couple of years ago but it didn't happen...

This was one of the best kids' tv shows ever created. FACT. ;) A bunch of my mates and I tend to get pissed and "play Knightmare" with pubs - i.e. one victim err I mean contestant clses his eyes and the others "guide" him to the next pub - cue all sorts of walking into bins, falling off the curb, walking into kebab shops, etc. Funny as hell when you're tw*tted, I guarantee it! ;)

I think one team did actually manage to complete the game, but it was incredibly hard - especially for kids. One false move and a bit later on Marcus the Monk (or something) wants the jar of honey you left on a tree stump back in level 1 and BAM you're dead!

Great show though, I well remember shouting at my TV 'FORWARD!! FORWARD!! NO NOT LEFT YOU FOOL!' as the team guided their friend off the edge of a precipice.

Yea they should bring this back - What with the current mood about all things 80's they should remake it (Aslong as they dont get Vernon Kay involved).

I think they should do it with adults maybe celebs as its probably the only way it will get commisioned.

I had the game on the Amiga and almost finished it. It was a Dungeon Master type of thing. I think it used the game engine from a previous game the programmer had made. I forget who made it. It might have been Tony Crowther.

I only ever saw a few of the TV episodes. I think it had a good opening title sequence, or good theme tune.

Yes! They could do it with "celebrities" from Big Brother. Particularly Michael, Pete and George. Except to make it better, you blindfold them and guide them off a REAL cliff!

Ooooh, nasty! (Tregard) :o

I would probably pay to see that. Especially Pete. What a nasty piece of work he is.

THREE teams completed it in the history of the show...

I never got to see the follow-up, The Satellite Game made for BSkyB back in the early 1990's. That was set on a space station.

Definitely.... and they could have Michael listening to Drowning Pool as he's going down, just for good measure, while the other two just float around... :D

Never liked that elf thing, Pickles. Spoiled it!

Still bloody good stuff though! :D

Knightmare was a really cool show! I remember coming back from my early days at school and watching this programme!

I can remember a lot of things about it such as going through doors, picking up scrolls etc, but I'm pretty sure that there were dragons in there too!

Had the game on the C64 (well, C128) as well. Pity it no longer loads!

iirc a couple of teams finished it. It was pretty exciting stuff :o

One of my favourite Knightmare memories actually comes from Amstrad Action. If I could be bothered trawling through them I could show you it... ahem.

It was a running gag I think, where they would call Rod Lawton Tregard. It was a picture of said Tregard and they alluded to it being Rod.
It actually sounds really lame now that I write it down. But in my teens it was hilarious.

I'll get me coat....

No, hang on. When I first watched WWTBAM, or "Millionaire" as we now call it, when the out of time siren went I jumped out of my seat crying "Goblins!!! Goblin alert."

I still do now. Sometimes... I really will get my coat.

KNIGHTMARE... Everything you need to know!!

Looking over this site and, in particular, the behind the scenes feature I was shocked to realise just how stage managed and "produced" it all was.

It's really shattered the illusion. Giving stage directions to a kid so he can fall down a well? Now that's just not right.

I never thought it was real, but I did think it was real time. I always figured they were in a room moving around obstacles or something. But stage directionssss.... NOoooooo!

merman - January 31, 2006 05:08 PM (GMT)
There were some obstacles, e.g. stairs, table and the well. But it was mostly blue screen...

MattC - January 31, 2006 05:36 PM (GMT)
:o

but ... it is real! I've seen it on television!

I always knew that... honest

What I didn't know was that it was done in takes and edited. I thought the kids were actually playing in real time. Seeing them stage manage a death spoils the illusion somewhat.
