Title: Retro Fusion is going commercial!!

boyo - February 1, 2006 12:05 PM (GMT)
I am extremely pleased to announce that I have secured a deal with Gamestation to deploy 3 issues of the Retro Fusion magazine into their stores throughout the UK over the next 6 months.

I am looking to get Issue 1 out in early March and it will cost £3.50.

Thanks very much for your support.

That's 64 pages of content plus the four pages of the cover (front, inside front, inside back, back) - it actually used to be a common size for magazines.

great news although my nearest gamestation is 70miles away will there be a mail order option on this

boyo - February 2, 2006 08:37 AM (GMT)
There will be a mail order option on this.

We will have a option on the site very soon to pre-order a copy. Thos who have pre-ordered will get their copy before it hits the shops.

How many pages of adverts will there be though ?

markopoloman - February 2, 2006 12:47 PM (GMT)
68 pages aint too bad if you think that until recently the mag would aso have contained Retro:Bytes.
So down to 68 pages and a drop in price = no problem!

Roll on issue 1 :)

Well, I'll definitely be buying it, as I try to support independent projects like this, but I just can't see it selling very well. Sorry. :( I'll try to get my friends & work colleagues to buy a copy, but I just feel it's got too much competition, what with Retro Gamer & the retro bit in Gamestm & the good old internet.

People will compare the magazines, see the lesser page count in RF & put it back on the shelf. Magazines already have fairly low figures, so a new magazine is going to have to do hell of a lot to stand out. And there's another factor.

My Gamestation isn't a particularly nice place. It smells & the people that I always see in there are those who don't have much money to spend on gaming, so they ain't going to buy an independent magazine. Plus the magazines are stuck behind the counter & always look dog-eared, instead of being on a nice display rack.

Anyway, good luck with RF. :)

Thats the polar opposite of my local branch.

Here its a modern high street store which is competitively priced. The staff are fairly well informed and friendly. The mags are all out on racks together in the centre of the store and are in decent nick. Its a pretty busy place with a fair turnover of new and used stock including a reasonable retro section covering UK consoles from 8 bit onwards (no home computer stuff other than PC which is a pity, but there's not much of a market for it - they did try initially).

Don't knock the low income spenders either. I don't exactly spend huge amounts on individual games, anything over a fiver pains me, but I do it often. I'd just as soon buy a mag that can help me spend my limited cash wisely...

Damaged Goods - February 2, 2006 01:40 PM (GMT)
So that just shows you how different, shops of the same chain can be. And I'm not knocking the low income spenders. I'm just going on my experience of being in the store every lunchtime & seeing who goes to the counter & buys what. And it's often little of the retro variety apart from PS1 games. It's mainly secondhand PS2 gear that gets traded/bought the most.

All I'm trying to do is offer some feedback (be it good or bad) about how RF might do, instead of just saying I'll buy a copy. :)
