Title: The Retro Scene
Description: what can we do to stop the rot within?
Turrican - February 13, 2006 10:56 PM (GMT)
Now some of you may or may not know that I am a little bitt pissed off at the fact that there are a few people who constitute a minority within the retro scene that are starting to infect the very scene that we love with a passion and make us feel like we owe them something, or that they know better, or that they will help to give us the best thing in retro since the SID chip when it comes to their opinions....
WELL I THINK IT'S A LOAD OF BOLLOCKS!!!!!!
These people are quite clearly looking out for ourselves and have turned what we loved against us so that they can try and bring their ego's up to the same level as their smugness.
I say enough is enough. The good honest people who love retro for the simple fact that they DO, not because they wanna earn a fast buck out of it, are being affected by the midnight cowboys and the things that they have done over the past while, be it backstabbing, suing or just downright childish namecalling.
So what are we all gonna do about it? What can all of us normal retro types do to curb the tide of badness running through our blessed land like a plague? We need to all stand as one and stop the immaturity af a few from destroying the love of many.
Ball's in your court, people.

I'd like to say two things here.
First of all that's a rather impassioned plea from Turrican and I agree with a lot of it - the fun has gone out of being involved with retro over the last few months, with a couple of notable exceptions (getting the Retro Survival disk published, having a laugh and a drink and some serious gaming at the Retro Ball).
Second, I don't want this thread to degenerate into name calling, accusations and bad stuff - nor do I want it ruined by silly behaviour.
If you have something serious to say and contribute to a DISCUSSION, then please post.

There is the problem Turri. There seems to be an ever decreasing feeling of community within the scene and this is constantly backed up by the frequently new "groups" (for want of a better word) that are appearing.
It is fragmented, to the point where people are beginning to really dislike eachother due to their opinions and views. The there is the money side of it. Threats of legal preceedings, backstabbing and the want for people to have their own private idaho within the scene itself.
Forums are ten a penny and to be honest are not a fraction on their former glories. RG was a pretty good place before its original demise, now its full of totally off topic posts. This very form has died a death. It servered its purpose and bridged the gap, but now that RG is back i is ovbious that people have gone back (although they may have since moved on again). Smaller forums (RF, RO, RB, RP etc) will only be ever that, places where select individuals hang out and chat.
It will be interesting to see the sales figures and fall out (if any) when the 3 free issues of the new RG are up (this months issue is the first full paying one I think), and this may give us an idea as to how the mainstream are taking the retro gaming revival themselves.
As for those of us who have been around a while, what can we do?
For me, the only thing that will do it will be to pool everyones resources into one place. One site (a big one) one forum (a big one), with everyone contributing. Everyone has a part to play, and everyone is just as important as everyone else. Harmony.
Cooks / Broth, Coybows / Indians etc etc (you get the picture) Anwyay, I feel that if it stays fragmented, I can only see the situation getting worse.

In fact, its a case of what are YOU prepared to do about it. You see its all well and good spouting that its a problem for you, but at the end of the day if you want it to change you have to make the effort yourself. We all have ideas about what we would love to do to change the situation, but at the end of the day it seems as if all the effort would be for very little and in all honesty would only create yet another "group" in this already fragmented scene. I commend your passion for the scene, but as you put it yourself, its only a past time and not the end of the world.

In fact its in yours. Those who you are pissed off with are probably laughing at your original post, if not only becuase you are giving them what they want and that is attention. I have seen and read most of the utter shite the minority are posting, creating, destroying, and it is simply childish immature and stupid. Ignore them and they will go away. DONT FEED THE TROLLS - simple really.
As for those who's idea is to make a fast buck, well they will find sonner rather than later that they will make absolutely nothing, and they will die a death just as quick as the scene seems to be doing.
As me and Koopa were discussing at RV5 a year ago, I would bet my mortgague on the fact that by Xmas this year, retro gaming will go back to its underground roots, which IMHO is where it was best, and where it belongs.
Whatever happens Turri, remember its only a game and life goes on :)
Regards
Simon

Maybe Ive missed the boat on this one. But what rot? I was an old poster on the RG forums from back around 2003 until its demise. Ive even lurked round here since its beginning as a forum (even if I rarely post) and I cant see any rot that you mention. Everything seems the same as it always was, talk of another retro ball, the mag going well, so whats the problem? I know mine and many other peoples collecting hasnt stopped.

I AM trying to do something about it, Simon.
I am trying to bring to people's attention that the way things are at the moment are not the same as they used to be. I am just expressing my opinion and the way I feel about the scene as a whole right now. Some people may not feel that way, think everything is fine and then carry on with their daily retro lives, which is entirely fine, but as this is a forum, I am just as equally entitled to express how I feel as much as anyone else. As usual, however, with every thread in here from "look what shit I'm selling on ebay this week" to "my 8 bit machine is better than yours... gimme your f'ing dinner money!" people will either agree or disagree... it's that simple
I have just seen things happen that I think are not right and it all started way back when Live died and took one of it's favourite sons with it, which in turn brought up a little hatred through a lack of payments to people, which I feel should not have been made as public as it was by certain people (most of the people affected though were pretty dignified with the whole situation), then we had the whole "LOOK AT ME, I HAVE A LAWSUIT AND I AM GONNA GIVE IT TO YOU!!!" scenario with RB, which was just completely insane, well in my opinion it was.
There have been other things happening since then which are equally bad and/or twisted, but I am not going to start namecalling.
Here are the simple rules:
1. If you think that the retro scene is as good as it was and that nothing is wrong, ignore this thread.
2. If you are so full of shit that all you can ever post in these forums are sentences that make you look like a fucking 4 year old, you know who you are, ignore this thread.... all the words will be too much for you anyway.
3. If you feel the same as I do, read the thread and remember that you are not the only one feeling the way that you do.
It is a free world. Everyone has their opinion and whether it is right or wrong, this is mine.
Bye
Turri

Guys - I am stuck in the middle on this post - I do understand the problems some people see within whats going on , but it is never black and white.
People making a fast buck - sure some people would say I am one of these , but it depends on your view , dont forget my core retro roots is retro-trader.com , I sell retro gear , but so does Andy at console passion , the retropassion guys etc. is anyone of us cashing in / not cashing in more than the next man , no one never sold anything on ebay then ?
The retro-soft project - again sure some people will point the finger , but sorry to disappoint the people hoping we would fail , we are (after a lot of trouble I would not pretend otherwise) doing the contracts to bring these licensed games out now this week in fact , a lot later than I hoped or planned for , but they are coming and will be in the shops worldwide over the course of the year , so sorry its not going underground just yet. But does that have to be a bad thing ? Dont also forget that the aim of Alten8 , apart from hopefully making a profit , is we are also supporting all NEW DEV TEAMS and games , both in a retro style and current , so yes we have to make money , or it all fails , but we are not just flogging off retro games , which is what we seemed to have been given the label of.
Magazines , a sore point for many fanzine to mag , people here , but Chris has got RetroFusion in the shops , and well done to him and hope it sells well , is he cashing in ? Is Imagine as a company cashing in on buying / selling retrogamer ? Well thats what companies do , but does that make the writers for it cashing in , bad , or just doing what they enjoy and getting paid to do so ?
Like I said at the top , I understand the frustation of some retro gamers , but like the rest of life , nothing is black or white , just grey.

One thing is certain, nobody is ever going to make millions dealing in obsolete technology. Mostly people are in this hobby simply for the enjoyment they derive from it - and if they can make a few quid on the side then who's complaining?
