Description: fun for all the family
Solidius - September 20, 2005 09:58 AM (GMT)
Hi All,
Do you all remember the days, coming home from school, and sitting down to watching your favorite Cartoons, not like the crap they have on today, classics like "Danger Mouse", "Count Duckula", and the american cartoons, show on the Cartoon Channel, like "Bravestar" or "Jason and the Wheelies", these are some of the best animation for the time and good story lines, unlike pokemon, the same shite over and over, another great classic, which a cult following on the internet, "Thundercats" any followers here?
post your views on some of your favorite cartoons, and us know,
my All time favotrites, which I have on DVD where, Ulysses 31 (Until I got it on DVD, I never knew if they made it back home)
as Shane Morone says "Keeping It Retro"
p.s. Anyone remember "Flash Gordan"cartoon from the makers of He-Man?, it had major sexual overtones

I remeber (and loved except blundercats) all of the above, here are some others
He-man
Mask
Cities of gold
Prince Valiant
and of course Dogtanian and the muskerhounds
and my personal favourite:
Dungeons and dragons - qwality class :D

Cities of Gold and Dogtanian were fantastic. Really strong stories that werent just invitations to spend money at Toys R Us.
I also liked Jamie and the Magic Torch, the theme tune rocked.
Not a cartoon but StarFleet aka X-bomber was an excellent non Jerry Anderson Japanese puppet show. Had touches of transformers, manga mechs, and power rangers.
Inspector Gadget was excellent too. Go go gadget submit button.
RS200 - September 20, 2005 10:29 AM (GMT)
my Top 5
1) Battle of the Planets (I have a 4xDVD set of this)
2) The Pink Panther (I have the 5xDVD Set of this too !)
3) Dungeons and Dragons (guess what - yeah i have the 4xDVD set)
4) He-Man (no - I DON'T have the DVD set to this !)
5) Centurions (... Power X-Treme ! .. would LOVE the DVD to this !)
Battle of the Planets will always be #1 for me .. even though 7-Zark-7 is really, REALLY quite camp and Zoltar looks like he wants to be in a drag queen contest.
I still watch a lot of Anime, i prefer the "older" funny stuff like Bubblegum Crash, Dominion Tank Police and my favourite - the "Project A-KO" series which has the added benefit of being well .. about lesbians !
Japanese Cartoons just rock !.
koopa42 - September 20, 2005 10:32 AM (GMT)
anime rules - I have akira (the best anime film) and ninja scroll on DVD, am planning to get things like Guyver and fist of the north star too.
And the ridiculously explicit overfiend films

I'm old enough to remember Buster Crabbe 'Flash Gordon' and 'Buck Rogers' serials on kids TV :). Dangermouse and Count Duckula became cult teen viewing though and I will admit to buying them on DVD, owning a Duckula mug and having the missus buy me a Dangermouse for my 35th birthday.
However, when I was a kid I used to watch the Superman cartoon series pretty much every week and every time Tom and Jerry or Looney Tunes cartoons were on I would be glued to the screen. Scooby Doo was another favourite as well and if 'The four musketeers' was on in the school holidays I would usually watch that as well.
Oh and for some reason 'Trapdoor' and 'Stoppit and Tidyup' became required post pub viewing in later years.

Dungeons and Dragons was ace!
Am I right that they never actually got home (for good)? ...and if not, why not? Goddammit!
koopa42 - September 20, 2005 08:18 PM (GMT)
On a few occasions home was there for the taking but it usually meant one of the group would have to stay behind holding some amulet foolishness to keep the portal open. Also The last few epsidoes were only produced in black and white, apparently due to there not being enough money :(

Just noticed the end of your post (missed it before). Trapdoor was indeed GOOD veiwing. As for Stoppit and Tidyup, I have all episodes on VHS. Definately for pre-school and post-pub. Good ties and narrated by Wogan too!
Continuing the thread, did anyone mention...
Space Sentinels?

jesus christ, I remember dis, but it is hazy, there super hero right?, this was golden oldie, why can't they make cartoon like dis anymore? top animation, funny robots and and Spirit inside a computer, which gave them there objectives, great stuff, the 80's where really the best days in my eyes, now if only I could invent that time machine,:)
Jaz NZ - September 21, 2005 04:47 AM (GMT)
Dungeon Master and the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
koopa42 - September 21, 2005 07:00 AM (GMT)
not really a cartoon but I also loved knightmare - when they used to but a helmet on on of the team and the others guided them through a D&D type game, if you watched it now the effects would probably be dire
Donnanut - September 21, 2005 07:11 AM (GMT)
Hi koops, yeah it was ok for a kids show, mind you I personally think that you just can't beat Tiswas, I never missed an ep :D
Freddy Hardest - September 21, 2005 08:10 AM (GMT)
Knightmare was essential viewing when I were a lad. Cant believe how how crap it looks now!!!
Transformers was the ONLY reason to watch TVAM. BTW, George Clooney is doing the voice of Optimus Prime in the new movie!!
I had a soft spot for Biker Mice From Mars too.
scoca - September 21, 2005 10:32 AM (GMT)
My favourites were the ones that I rarely saw, such as Hong Kong Phooey, The Harlem Globetrotters and Spiderman.
I've never seen Starfleet but I've got the Mini LP by Brian May and Friends and it's pretty damn good.
Never liked Dogtanian though, it just seemed to go on and on and on...
Oh yeah, mustn't forget Godzilla!
Danforth - September 21, 2005 11:15 AM (GMT)
Several of the shows mentioned in this thread can be gotten from
http://www.raretv.co.uk/ including Starfleet, Centurions and Space Sentinels :)
They only do shows that aren't commercially available, so if an official DVD is announced, they pull their copy. Fairy nuff.
kaiserpc - September 21, 2005 11:21 AM (GMT)
My personal favs were (are):
Mysterious Cities of Gold was pure class - can't wait till they release that on DVD (managed to download some episodes of emule - but they are bad VHS copies)
Dogtanian and the 3 muskahounds - used to watch this every week - did it ever finish? Loved the theme tune as well "one for all, and all for one muskahounds ..."
Dangermouse - Terry Scott & David Jason at their best. Penfold - bronze medal winner in the Penfold look-a-like competition
Dungeons & Dragons - execept for uni - mmmeeehhhh!
Inspector Gadget - pure class again - what was the dog called?
Starfleet - again pure class - wouldn't mind a dvd release of this as well
Great memories!

Turrican - September 23, 2005 11:50 AM (GMT)
Well, I did like Galaxy Rangers, Visionairies and the Raccoons, but I am a Transformers guy all the way. Just bought the Revamped version of the movie and what a difference... :D
OH SHIT!!! WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO NOW??!!
;)
Antiriad2097 - September 23, 2005 03:37 PM (GMT)
Well, today I have bought 2 Sonic the Hedgehog videos (which I gave away to a young fan), a Super Mario video and a Spiderman 1970's live action series video.
No idea if they have any value, but I never watched Mario when it was on and my memory of the Spiderman series is sketchy. All that I really remember is that his suit was a bit baggy and his web was more like rope than anything.
Astria - September 23, 2005 04:37 PM (GMT)
I've just joined Screen Select, you know the folk that send you DVDs in the post? Anyways one of the first titles I got was Battle of the Planets, and I think its still ace even now... I even remembered all the words to the theme tune... lol
Was having a dig around their site and there's hundreds of other anime titles there - can anyone suggest a few classics that I should get, apart from Akira which I've seen?

As i mentioned in this thread - you won't go far wrong with hiring any of the "Project AKO" series - esp. if you like Battle of the Planets - it pays some homage to that for sure.
I also like a lot of the funny anime - things like "Dominion Tank Police" but also more serious anime like Gologo 13 and Patlabor, Appleseed .. all good stuff !.
Did you hire all 4 of the DVD Set to BOTP ?
I know what you mean about the theme tune - once in your head ... never comes out :)
Ross ...
Mike - September 23, 2005 04:46 PM (GMT)
RS you like Anime too! Dominion Tank Police was class, interogating the suspect by sticking a hand grenade in his mouth and throwing knives at him on a wheel of death. And the cat sisters. :P
I'd recomend Venus Wars, it's a pretty good all out action film anime.
Also, the Appleseed comics and anything by Adam Warren. B)
Turrican - September 23, 2005 05:28 PM (GMT)
I would have to say that Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away are simply breathtaking, but if you want to stick to the usual suspects like Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll et al then thats good too.
I would personally recommend also: Mobile Successor Nadesico and of course the Evangelion series, which is great apart from the WTF ending.. :D
koopa42 - September 23, 2005 09:47 PM (GMT)
ninja scroll rocks, jubay (or hiowever u spell it) hes solid, take yo face clean off, anyone who wants and accidental backuyp let me know
Patdfb - September 24, 2005 09:07 PM (GMT)
See my last post for anime recommendations, but I' d also add Roujin-Z by Otomo Katsuhiro, Gunsmith Cats, 3x3 Eyes, Ultimate Teacher (for a Laugh) Nausicaa:Valley of the Wind, Porco Rosso, Rumik's World, Sailor Moon and Wings Of the Hominase.
Hope that Helps

to Murgatroyd..fabulous,cant remember what show or channel it was on though.
Who is Murgatroyd? cheers peter(unfashionably late to here!).

Probably as good a place as any to put this as it bears relevance to the subject. Play.com have got the Tom & Jerry classic collection DVDs going at £6.99 each. I have just blown what was left of my pay after the mortgage company and missus dipped their fingers into my wallet on six DVDs worth of cat and mouse japes (about 18 hours worth). Along with my Looney Tunes and Daffy Duck ones I shall be hibernating for about a week to view this lot :)
