Title: If we could all go back in time to buy stuff...

Jumpman - October 19, 2005 06:23 PM (GMT)
You might have read my post in the Coleco tabletop thread, but I'll give you the gist of it...

If we could go back to 1985 to buy a load of retro to be goodies, what would we buy?

To pay we'd need to get a bundle of old hundred pound notes, minted before 1985 (if that's possible but I don't think it matters seeing as time travel is theoretical) which would mean we could start off with fewer notes and get them changed into 1985 currency when we started buying things. Clever, eh? ;)

So what would we get? I'll start:

Rare 8-bit micros and the software that I know is uber rare now. Such as Ultimate games.

Tabeltop LCD games - Pacman, Donkey Kong, Frogger, Caveman.

LCD games - Super Galaxy Invaders (which I owned but I'm an idiot).

And if we had a fair wad of cash I'd recommend we pick up some Arcade cabinets that are being junked. Space Invaders and Pacman would be nice. And a multi player Supersrint if space in the time machine isn't an issue... Oh and a Pole Position cabinet, was that around before 85? And Wonderboy... We could always skip forward a few years if need be :D

And one of these Killer Shark. Oh how I would love one of those.

Can anyone add some things that really don't exist anymore?

Maybe Frank Gasking could nab a load of Games that Weren't from software houses?

-edited to fix wrong shark link...

koopa42 - October 19, 2005 06:36 PM (GMT)
would that be the killer shark machine that appears in an arcade in the movie 'jaws'?

Patdfb - October 19, 2005 06:47 PM (GMT)
I'd get

A Load of imported BTTF Promo Stuff as Well as trying to get an Imported De Lorean used in the filem, there were 6 or summat

Invest in stocks that would tide over a tidy profit, dont want to be rich or well off, comfortable enough to reach retirement and do all i want is enough.

hmm 1885 what else

A couple of rare Swatch Watch amongst others

Will add more when i remember

TTFN PINKY

I'd go back in time about 5 weeks and buy 3 or 4 PSPs. You can't buy one for love nor money now.

Further back, I'd buy 2 copies of Panzer Dragoon Saga. Or all the copies of RG #1 on the shelf in Smiths that day.

I would just go back to 98 or whenever it was and stop me selling my copy of Symphony of The Night for £2.

If I was to go back and be able to get one thing it would be an electromechanical gift machine from the Royal Arcade in Weymouth. It involved an elephant with a Howdah that moved around a scene and dropped a cardboard box containing a gift down a chute. It was possibly late Edwardian but still running in the early 1970s. As a kid I loved that machine and if we were in town on a Saturday I would always get my father to take me up to the arcade and part with 5p, not so much for the tacky plastic gifts it dispensed (although some were good) but to watch the elephant moving through the jungle. Then, one day it was gone. For a while it was out the back of the arcade in a damp corner of the workshop decaying slowly but the owners would not sell it, I got my father to ask.

Now if I could go back and 'liberate' it I would.

If I could get two things, the other would be a 1930s MG that was left to rot in a side road near where I used to live. The owner was too stupid to realise that a beautiful car like that shouldn't be treated that way and again refused an over the top offer from me to buy it. Again, back in time with a tow truck and it would be mine.

1985 eh ? hmm, Well firsty I'd buy a packet of pacers cause I miss them sooo much

Other than that I see no other alternative but to buy some shares in a lil known company called microsoft ....and then 20 years later ....Wealth beyond my imagination *INSERT EVIL LAUGH HERE*

Ok, so I'd be revulsed by most of the civilised world, but I'd live with that on my island in the carribean.

If i could turn back time i wouldnt have thrown away my old Star Wars bubble gum cards. I also wouldnt have opened up any of my old star wars figures !

Also i wouldnt have turned down a few girls i used to know because i was with a gf at the time (and then when i wasnt with her it was too late with those girls !)

Also if i could turn back time i would know when to stop having a few extra drinks on a friday night. Half comotosed i think 'yeah its a great idea if i then go onto vodka shots followed by some tequila, great idea' ! ;-)

The tall snaggletooth is the rare one cos Kenner only had a pic of his face to go by and only released it with the Cantina Playset. The small one was released as a standard figure.Other than that, Yak Face, the vinyl caped Jawa and the prototype rocket firing Boba Fett are the daddies of the SW figures financially speaking. Most of the last 16 made are pretty rare too but only if carded.

Yes Im a Nerd. :(

psj3809 - October 20, 2005 03:50 PM (GMT)
I remember having that Snaggletooth, sure he was quite 'blueish' ! Didnt realise that Yak face one was so dear

I sadly departed with all my figures about 2 years ago, got 150 quid for the los but on their own probably worth more. My old Subbeteo also sold for 130 quid so it wasnt bad.

Anyway sorry back to the topic ! ...

Of course the 'Sports Almanac' would be no use at all unless you actually meant you would buy one BEFORE going back to 1985. ;)

If I could go back to 1985?

I'd probably first take a long wander around my home town and take tons of photographs for nostalgia purposes. I'd probably spy on myself playing with my friends from way back then (okay, I'd probably look like a dirty old man or something but I'd make sure I wasn't spotted. )

I'd then probably use that Sports Almanac I brought on the journey with me down the local betting shop ;)

I'd really like to get a Gold Raleigh Burner Pro BMX. I also wanted one but ended up with some no name bike from my mum's catalogue :(

They're hard to find now as the gold starts flaking off.

woah ... Burners were top ! .. i upgraded my "Grifter" for a blue/yellow Burner .. i so wish i had it today .. i really regret swapping it and £50 for a Diamond Back !.

Burners really looked the part though, eh ?

psj3809 - November 2, 2005 12:29 PM (GMT)
I still moan at my parents for this....

Back in those days i had a 'Commando', a camoflauged (sp) bike which was heavy as anything. Then BMX's came out and me and my mates were stuck with a Grifter or a Commando.

My dad refused to buy me a new BMX which he said was the same apart from those 'pad things' on them as he put it.

Instead he got me some piping insulation and taped it round my bike where normal pads would be on a BMX. At the time i couldnt really say it looked crap. I even went to 'BMX Club' and got totally laughed at as i turned up on this heavy as hell Commando with piping insulation bits over it. Dont get me wrong, those BMX pads were a con, it was practically the same material but with a cool coloured layer over it

After that humilation i refused to ever ride that bike again, eventually got a racer but i was quite sad not to get a BMX when the craze was on.

DonkeySpank - November 2, 2005 02:32 PM (GMT)
Crikey that's almost the same as me - I had a Grifter and wasn't allowed to have a brand new BMX when they were the craze (Remember the BMX Mongoose - oh man I wanted one of those, especially after watching BMX Bandits with Nicole Kidman! :D )

Anyway, I decided to paint my Grifter silver and put some foam-padding around the cross-bar and the bar between the handlebars. Hahahaha so funny just thinking of it!!

After that, and I'm blushing just thinking of this, I re-painted it red, removed the padding and painted the word "Hulkster" on the cross-bar in a yellow "ripped"-style font. Hahhaahahhahahah!!! What a knobber!

zerohour - November 2, 2005 06:27 PM (GMT)
I would go back and find out if Burton's Wagon Wheels really have got smaller... They claim they have not but I am sure they were much larger when I was a kid compared to the piddley things you get now...

Does the Forum Spellchecker also have Grammar checking facilities?

rossi46 - November 3, 2005 09:01 AM (GMT)
If we could go back in time I'd revisit the time when my ex.gf came up to me and started chatting me up. I'd politely say that I had other plans and walk calmly away.Very fast.

necronom - November 3, 2005 10:02 AM (GMT)
I has a Grifter as well!

I painted it metallic blue, put a mongoose crossbar pad on, and put blue tyres on it. It looked brilliant (I thought so anyway), but still drove like a tank.

If I could go back in time I would take a picture of my favourite drawing that I drew in art. A friend of the family saw it and said, "You should take a photo of it". At the time I thought, what is the point. There was no way I wouldn't get it back, was there? Well, there was. I didn't get it back :(

I would have liked to have bought one of the PETs from school when thet were selling them for £50, but even if I went back, I wouldn't have had the money.

I suppose I would buy some cheap, but rare stuff. Not sure exactly what though.

rossi46 - November 3, 2005 10:18 AM (GMT)
I wouldn't have GIVEN my copy of Saturn Sky Target away because it was sh1te. (idiot)

Solidius - November 3, 2005 11:27 AM (GMT)
I would have a Starwars Millennium boxed brand new, if would be worth a forture now, and to think I had one these and abused it like every other kid did at the time, what a turkey

Sniffles....Sob... you think you had it bad, when I was 13 my dad let me have access to his air rifle and I used all my little star wars figures for target practice
:(

bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

how could I have been so foolish

Solidius - November 3, 2005 06:07 PM (GMT)
I know what you mean, I had them all -, Boba Fett's Slave One, AT-AT walkers all in great condition untill I got my demon hands on them, and heap of Figures to with them, I cry at the thought that they are gone forever

planetmatt - November 3, 2005 08:51 PM (GMT)
As BMXs go, I actually thought the Mongoose bikes were better than the Burners. However the Burner Pros really looked cool in the gold. I guess these days they'd be ridden by bling loving chavs but in the day, they were sheer class.

I raced on an Ultra Burner. The one with the suntour groupset. It was ok, but when I biult up my GT Pro 4 complete with Redline Flight cranks (remember them?) I was flying. I aslo had a SE Racing Quadangle for street/freestyle but that weighed a ton.

if I could go back to 85, I'd knock on the door of my old house and give the little me a grand to buy all the games I wanted, about '85 was the year toys died so would of been able to pick up some heavily discounted Action man and star wars to have for now.

could of made a nice little earner buying VCRs now for £30 and selling them back then for hundreds ;)

Mike - November 7, 2005 04:11 PM (GMT)
If I could go back in time I wouldn't have started this effing thread.
