Title: Pacers

Jumpman - October 25, 2005 01:45 AM (GMT)
Someone mentioned Pacers.

They were a great loss. For some reason I seemed to think Pacers were replaced by Opal Fruits much in the same way M&M's are taken to have replaced Treats.
The connection is very probably only in my head though, unless you can enlighten me further? Or was it Fruitella?

I was telling a friend about Pacers the other week and how miffed I was that they vanished. And how even more miffed I was when around the time Spangles dropped back in Chewits started making Mint Chewits. OOoooohhhhh mmmmmm.

They were great. Almost Pacers (which had an ad campaign back in the early 80's, didn't they?) and then I could only get them in Woolies, along with Spangles, and then all of a sudden, gone! As were Spangles thpugh it took me longer to realise seeing as how I don't get the concept of hard fruits - i.e Fox's Glacier Fruits. (Were they Glacier? No, just the mints right?)
On reflection I think it was either a professional job or that the Chewits and Spangles took each other out in some kind of duel or suicide pact.

Interesting (?) story about Glacier, or whatever, Fruits. They tasted nice but were as sticky as anything. You spent ages unwrapping them and then you spent as long trying to get them off your hands. Anyway, when I was about 12 or 13 my aunt came over and gave me a packet of them (they were primarily a gift sweet I found, like Fry's Creams). I took them up to bed with me later and tried to eat a few before I went to sleep. I couldn't get them out of the wrappers. Try as I might - pulling, tearing, biting and spitting them out - I just could not get at them.
So, bright idea, I decided to get a cup of water, drop them all in there and after 10 minutes or so I'd fish them out and they'd be easy to get open - stickiness averted.

8 hours later I wake up, lamp still on and a rather interesting cup of coloured water sitting by the bed with wrappers floating in it.

Took me a moment, but I soon worked it out... Anyway, I didn't like them as it was. Or maybe this caused my aversion? Not sure.

I briefly considered drinking it, thinking it might be delightfully fruity in my wrong headed youthful fashion, but I'm pleased to say I poured it out.

I can smell a Pacers, Chewits, Opal Fruits, Fox's Glacier Fruits and Polo Fruit poll emerging further down the line.

In all honesty, if I was to choose a chewy sweet with a wrapper around it, it was always Toffos. Primarily for the dark brown ones, which were simply delicious. The red ones were quite odd, although scrumptious too.

I'm not I ever had a Pacer, which in my head sit alongside Remmies (although that's just some misconceived childhood connection) but I'd imagine they taste better then bus depots, just like Chewits did.

*chink* Here's to sweets that created the martket for fillings. Dentistry woud be a poorer profession without 'em.

PS Aww, I have an appointment with Evil Dr. Dentist next week too.

Good quiz question - What is the name of the polar bear that stands on a Fox's Glacier Mint?

And yes, I know the answer. :)

Very cool sweets. Tasted lovely, melted in the mouth, got you hyper after three or four packets and when you puked 'em all up your sick didn't smell of sick but of sweeties. Marvellous. :D

Cue John Barnes and his "isotonic" Lucozade. After ninety minutes of sheer hell I usually preferred several pints of lager.
