Title: Retro Gamer Back For Sale December 8th

RetroTrader.Com - October 28, 2005 08:41 AM (GMT)
Retro Gamer has been bought , and will be back out for sale Dec 8th!

Well everything changes overnight ...... are you still going to do it guys ?? or are you now going to put the content in the NEW 'Retro Gamer' magazine , which Imagine has now bought the rights to and will be on sale on December the 8th for £4.99 (no mention of if they will stand by outstanding subscriptions).

As per todays issue of of MCV ?? It announces that they have bought the title , some of the original staff / writers MAY be involved , and that the decision to put out your CD may now change ?

I dont know what to think , as I had an email from Damian Butt , a short while ago , after some intial emails to discuss Retro-Bytes etc. that he had no interest in aquiring Retro Gamer , or retro magazines , but this obviousely must have changed since then also , so is this disc going to be put out still , or will this change also now due to the magazine ?

Dont keep us all in the dark guys !

Hi there, moved your post here to give it full attention.

All I can say right now is this:

Yes, I was aware of what was happening. I will tell the forum more when I can.

BUT... the key thing to emphasise here is that THE CD WILL GO AHEAD. We have had to delay the launch by a few days due to production problems.

Strider - October 28, 2005 09:02 AM (GMT)
God, I've been wanting to tell everyone about this for what seems like ages :D

I'll be leaving gamesTM to oversee Retro Gamer and am really looking forward to the challenge.

As for details like subscriptions, I'll get news to you as soon as I know.

DonkeySpank - October 28, 2005 09:07 AM (GMT)
Hey Strider, nice one mate - I'm so looking forard to this I can't tell you how much! ;)

RetroBob - October 28, 2005 09:08 AM (GMT)
Great news, best news infact since... Retro Gamer. Now where do I subscribe????

Damaged Goods - October 28, 2005 09:15 AM (GMT)
Good news for Retro Gamer Magazine - bad news for Games tm. :( I wonder who'll be taking over the retro helm at GTM ?

Lorfarius - October 28, 2005 09:21 AM (GMT)
What will happen to Martyn Carrol? Will he still be involved?

koopa42 - October 28, 2005 09:23 AM (GMT)
Good luck exGamesTM bloke :D

As for Martyn Carroll... he left Live, don't know yet if he will have anything to do with the new magazine...

Doz - October 28, 2005 09:25 AM (GMT)
Strider - Any jobs goin for a graphic designer/illustrator? Oh well, if you don't ask. ;)

Strider - October 28, 2005 09:26 AM (GMT)
It's going to be a brand new editorial team. The only familiar faces will be RG's freelancers.

Timppa - October 28, 2005 09:28 AM (GMT)
Great! I have been reading through my old RG issues and have noticed how much I miss the magazine. It is whole different thing to get professional printed mag on paper than reading downloadable mags. I hope freelancers will get back as well (it is a new publisher at least).

I they fullfill my subscribtion I will definitely re-subscribe this new Retro Gamer!

Could be even better if they honour existing subscriptions!

Can we get a reanimated picture of corpesy please?

I still won't buy RG, and I bet Gamestm retro section starts to suck.

I'm not exactly sure what's happening on the subscription front at the mo. One thing that has been discussed is that subscribers will receive three issues free, and if they like it, will be able to re-subscribe at a cheaper rate.

Once I have more concrete details I'll let you all know.

OMG do a reverse on the image and make it dance LOL

LeeT - October 28, 2005 09:49 AM (GMT)
Great News (of course) and proof that there is still interest in publishing a national newstand mag devoted to retro.

I think we can all agree that RG will be in safe hands with Darran at the helm...

Donnanut - October 28, 2005 09:52 AM (GMT)
Sorry Merman, I diddn't see this thread  Good news for those that have subscriptions I hope.

CdrJameson - October 28, 2005 10:00 AM (GMT)
Woo! Could be a happy ending for everyone.

I'm glad we can bridge the gap between 'old' and 'new' Retro Gamer with our CD.

Good for you. Well done and I'm very happy RG is coming back. I'd all but given up hope. I hope you will do great things with the mag.

I do want to say that I'm sad that Martyn isn't coming back. However I'm sure there are valid reasons and I want to wish him the best if he's reading this.

One thing, I hope Stuart Campbell will be asked to contribute to the new look mag from time to time. I've recently been reading some of the articles on his site and have been reminded that he remains one of the most knowledgeable and high quality writers out there. He knows old games inside out. Please consider asking him.

Well now that the news is public knowledge I guess we can all breathe a collective sign of relief. Beyond all the bitterness and recriminations that surrounded Live's sad collapse, I just hoped in my heart that the magazine would somehow continue. After all, Retro Gamer was pretty much my life for nearly two years, so I've always felt quite paternal about the title, and certainly proud of what it managed to achieve in such a short amount of time.

Imagine deserve credit for having the balls to pick up the pieces, and given the resources at their disposal, I'm sure they'll create a very professional title. Good luck to Darran in his new role - I'm confident he'll continue to receive the respect and support of the retro community.

In short, this is great news. Maybe one day I'll write the true insider story of Retro Gamer, and now it looks like my musings will cover just the humble beginnings of a much longer tale.

Thanks for the kind words mate, it's appreciated :)

Good Luck Darran - u know u have my support :D

Spector - October 28, 2005 10:46 AM (GMT)
It's the news we all wanted to hear, but what does Mr Bebbington have to say about it? He has a title coming out too...

MrWoppit - October 28, 2005 10:49 AM (GMT)
Damn! Somebody will have to change that Wikipedia entry back to the present tense ;)

Antiriad2097 - October 28, 2005 10:53 AM (GMT)
I'm just well chuffed that Strider finally gets to turn his talents to a full mag.

I don't expect it'll be much like the old RG, and part of me thinks thats a good thing. Maybe we get the best of RG and RetroTM.

Strider , I don't suppose you need a freelance proof reader? I've an eye for typos and a decent knowledge of retro gaming for accuracy checking. Special offer for the new venture ;)

Please don't copy any of Imagine's XBox 360 Magazine design ideas though. That magazine made my eyes & brain hurt...

There's a press release over at www.imagine-publishing.co.uk now.

It says:

QUOTE
Imagine acquires Retro Gamer

Imagine Publising, the innovative new specialist magazine publisher
announces today the acquisition of Retro Gamer magazine

Retro Gamer was launched in December 2003 and is the only newsstand magazine in the UK totally dedicated to covering the classic gaming scene – from ZX81 to Sega MegaDrive, from classic coin-ops to Commodore Amiga.
Published monthly, Retro Gamer is famous for delivering authoritative and in-depth articles covering every facet of the classic computer gaming scene, including developer interviews, celebrations of great gaming moments, and detailed hardware profiles.

The magazine will be re-launched by veteran games journalist Simon Phillips, who was responsible for the award-winning multiformat games magazine, gamesTM, which featured its own popular retro section. Imagine’s Creative Director Mark Kendrick, ex-Crash and Zzap!64, will oversee Retro Gamer’s new look.

“The UK has a proud gaming heritage and its retro scene is now more buoyant than ever. Retro Gamer is extremely well regarded and I am pleased that we have been able to secure its future” said Damian Butt, Managing Director.

“Imagine Publishing’s plan is to grow through a combination of new launches and
acquisitions and Retro Gamer fits well into this strategy.”

Imagine will publish Retro Gamer from issue 19, with a completely new design, editorial direction and team, though many of the magazine’s long-standing writers will continue to contribute.
The first issue will go on sale on 8 December 2005.

Imagine Publishing was founded in 2005 by three former directors of Paragon Publishing. The Imagine team have launched over 60 magazines in the last ten years, including a number of leading videogames magazines.

Yup, Mark Kendrick, ex-Zzap!, excellent news and all that! :)

Well it is great news and congrats to Darran. He seems like a good bloke and 'one of us' so to speak.

I'm not being a tight git but its the principle of it - if i get the issues i've paid for with my subscription i'll carry on buying RG, if not then i probably wont out of principle.

I'll probably buy it month to month but no 12 month subscriptions for me again ! Once bitten and all that

Anyway it is great news and i look forward to the new format. I actually loved GamesTM retro section as it was more game-orientated rather than some obscure machine or game. Hope the new look RG will be more of the same

I'm the same. I will definitely not be subscribing.

The mag has new owners, a new editorial team and the freelancers are going to be contributing. I'm well happy about this and that will see me buying the mag each month.
It isn't enough to make me hand over money before I've got the product though. Been there and done that. Not doing it again.

Strider - October 28, 2005 11:30 AM (GMT)
We're not expecting you to buy a year's subscription on blind faith (especially after what happened with Live). Still, if you enjoy the mag, it would be nice if you could consider it at a later date...
